Disease transmitted by tick bites that
affects all the systems of the body. First
described in 1977 following an outbreak in
children living around Lyme, Connecticut,
USA, it is caused by the microorganism
Borrelia burgdorferi, isolated by Burgdorfer
and Barbour in the USA in 1982. Untreated,
the disease attacks the nervous system,
heart, liver, kidney, eyes and joints, but
responds to the antibiotic tetracycline. The
tick that carries the disease, Iricinus,
lives on deer, while B. burgdorferi relies on
mice during its life cycle.
